What do Romanian households spend their money on?

The average household revenues in Romania amounted to almost EUR 600 in the third quarter of last year whereas the total spending reached EUR 519, or 86.7% of the income.

Some 72% of the total expenses went into consumption while close to 20% went to the state as taxes, according to data from the National Statistics Institute INS.

Of the total consumption expenses, which were close to EUR 380 per month, 37.6% went on food (some EUR 141) and 8.1% went on alcoholic beverages and tobacco (EUR 30). The expenses related to housing and utilities were 16.6% of the total consumption expenditures, or EUR 62 per month.

Romanian households also spent some EUR 23 per month on clothing and footwear, EUR 22 per month on transport, and a similar sum on recreational activities and culture.

The communication expenses were some EUR 19 per month, higher than those for healthcare (EUR 19) and furniture and house care (EUR 16). The average household in Romania spent only EUR 4.3 per month on hotel stays and restaurant meals and less than EUR 1 on education.
