Subway joins charitable suspended coffee movement in Romania

11 April 2013

Restaurant chain Subway will be the first large chain on the Romanian market to introduce the suspended coffee concept, which has already been implemented in the US and in other European countries, and which had recently also started on the Romanian market. In Romania, it was introduced by Getlokal.ro, which put together the list of coffee places that serve suspended coffee and which  offered a six-month free promotion on the site to all those who join the movement.

The charity idea consists in buying extra coffees and choosing not to drink then, but instead leaving them with the restaurant for somebody who does not have money to buy them. The idea first came up in the south of Italy, where it is called Coffee Sospenso.

Elsewhere in the world, Starbucks recently joined the suspended coffee movement, and added an extra bit to it: the coffee chain will match the value of each Suspended Coffee with a cash donation to the Oasis charity.

The concept of buying extra coffees and reserving some of them for somebody in need has recently become popular on the Romanian market, with various coffee shops providing this options for their customers.
