Romania's Senate rejects request to prosecute former minister on diaspora vote

22 June 2016

Romania’s Senate rejected yesterday the National Anticorruption Directorate – DNA’s request to allow the prosecution of former Foreign Affairs Minister Titus Corlatean.

The former minister is accused of having tried to prevent the Romanians living abroad to vote in the presidential elections held in November 2014.

Almost two years ago, thousands of people failed to cast their vote after waiting in line for hours in several European capitals. The minister was accused of not taking any measures to increase the voting stations. Corlatean said yesterday that he rejected the charges, and that he felt a deep regret for the Romanians who couldn’t vote.

The problems experienced by the Romanian diaspora in the first round of elections led to Corlatean’s resignation eight days after the first round of the elections. Teodor Melescanu, who replaced him, resigned two days after the second round of elections, after tens of thousands of people waiting in vain, again, to cast their vote.
