Romania men's handball team scores important victory against Poland

Romania men's handball team scored an important victory against Poland, one of the best men’s handball teams in the world on Sunday evening, in Cluj-Napoca. Romania beat Poland 28-23 and is now first in Group 2 of the qualifiers for the European Handball Championship in 2018.

The Romanian team is managed by Spaniard Xavier Pascual, who’s also the manager of the FC Barcelona handball team. With Pascual at the helm, Romania also beat Belarus last week, 26-23, in Minsk.

Romania has 4 points, Belarus and Serbia have 2 points each, and Poland is last with 0 points. The first two teams in each group and the best third placed teams qualify to the European Championship.

Romania’s next match is on May 3 or 4 against Serbia.

Romania men's handball team last qualified to a European Championship in 1996. Meanwhile, Poland won the bronze medal at the 2015 World Championship and finished 4th at the Rio Olympics.

The Polish national team is managed by famous Kirghiz coach Talant Duyshebaev, who also manages Polish handball team Kielce, the winner of this year’s EHF Champions League.

On November 11, the Romanian national football team also plays against Poland in the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The match will take place on Bucharest’s National Arena.
