Romanian woman reports fake robbery to hide EUR 30,000 shopping spree from her husband

01 June 2016

A woman from Craiova, southwestern Romania, reported almost EUR 30,000 stolen from her car. The police found that she had spent the money without telling her husband and then invented the robbery story as a cover-up.

The man was working abroad and was periodically sending money to his wife. However, his wife spent almost all of the family's hard earned savings on clothing items, shoes, and perfumes, without telling her husband. When he returned to Romania, the man asked his wife to give him the EUR 30,000 he knew he had managed to save to buy a car. That is when the woman said that the money was stolen and called the police, reports local Mediafax.

The wife told the cops that “unknown persons took EUR 29,300 from the car she had parked in front of a bar in Leu village,” according to Alin Apostol, spokesman within Dolj County Police Inspectorate. When conducting researches, the police officers noticed that the woman was changing her statement about what happened.

When they finally realized that the money wasn’t actually stolen, the police decided to hear the woman one more time. That is when she admitted to reporting a fake robbery because she had spent the money without her husband’s permission.
