Romanian sells 3 paintings for record price in Sotheby's auction

28 October 2014

Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie, 37, sold three paintings for a total of EUR 1.4 million during a recent auction in London, at Sotheby's.

The most expensive was the work Duchamp's Funeral I, which sold for EUR 1.28 million, more than twice its minimum pre-auction valuation. It was also one of the most expensive works of art sold during that auction, and one of the session’s surprises.

The other two paintings sold by the Romanian were Study for The Devil and Hunger. Ghenie, who left Romania in 2001 upon graduating a local arts and design university, exhibited his works in the US, Italy, Germany and France.
