Romanian MPs will resume talks on increasing their salaries

11 January 2016

The Romanian MPs will resume talks on the bill that provides an increase in the wages of high officials.

The specialized committees within the Chamber of Deputies will discuss about the controversial emergency ordinance issued by the former Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea, which increased the salaries of high officials, reports local Mediafax. The Senate rejected the bill in mid-November last year, but the Chamber of Deputies has the final say.

The MPs were unhappy with the draft law because only the leaders of the Parliament’s two chambers benefited from the raises, together with the President, Prime Minister, ministers, the president of the Supreme Court, and other high officials. The senators wanted to amend the bill so that all MPs would get higher salaries.

The work and budget and finance committees should debate the emergency ordinance at the beginning of February.
