Romanian MPs adopt laws for increasing salaries, pensions

08 November 2016

Romania’s Chamber of Deputies adopted on November 7 the law on approving the emergency ordinance no.20 that introduces several wage increases for public sector employees.

Labor Minister Dragos Pislaru said yesterday in the Chamber of Deputies that the Government plans to challenge the law at the Constitutional Court, reports local Mediafax.

The minister said that behind the official report that talks about salary increases between 5% and 15%, there are things which are kept hidden. For example, the salaries of pharmacists with experience will go up by 53%. Also, the school managers will record wage growths of over 50%. This will create an even larger gap between employees with experience and beginners.

After the vote, the National Liberal Party (PNL) MPs claimed that the vote should be declared invalid, because there weren’t enough MPs in the room for the vote. The group’s technical staff said that it would bring video footage to prove that.

The Senate also adopted two bills, for increasing the pension point up to RON 1,072 (EUR 238) starting January 1 next year, and to over RON 1,200 (EUR 267) starting July 1 next year. The pensions are calculated on the basis of pension points.
