Romania might have the third-steepest population drop in the world by 2050

31 July 2015

Romania’s population might drop by 22% by 2050, according to the United Nations – UN’s latest study on the world population prospects. This would be the third steepest drop of all the countries in the world, only surpassed by Bulgaria (-28%), and Ukraine (-23%).

According to the UN’s report, Romania’s population could go down to 15.2 million, by 2050, from the current level of 19.5 million. Romania thus stands to lose some 4.3 million people in just 35 years, according to the most probable scenario. Most of this drop will be due to natural decrease.

Romania is one of the 48 countries projected to experience population declines, most of which are Eastern European countries.

According to UN’s projections, the world’s population will likely increase by a third by 2050, to over 9.7 billion people. The most accelerated growth will be in Africa, where the population will more than double.

Niger, a country in Western Africa that now has a population similar to Romania’s (some 19.9 million people), will register the highest increase, of 263%. Its population will grow to over 72 million by 2050.
