Lending costs in lei fall to historic lows again in Romania

09 February 2016

The interbank interest rate ROBOR for three months, the main benchmark for the cost of loans in lei, reached yesterday the historic low of 0.79% per year, down from 0.82% in the previous meeting.

This has been the most significant drop rate since July 2015.

The decrease in the ROBOR 3M rate shows that the loans could become cheaper starting March when most banks will update their variable interest rates to the new ROBOR rate. Banks carry out this transaction every three months.

In January, the cost of loans in lei dropped below 1% per year for the first time since 1990 due to the excess liquidity in the banking system.
