US Republican Senator John McCain, a former US presidential candidate, thinks that democracy in the US won’t be in danger if Donald Trump becomes President, because the US isn’t Romania.

“I still believe we have the institutions of government that would restrain someone who seeks to exceed their constitutional obligations. We have a Congress. We have the Supreme Court. We’re not Romania,” said McCain quoted by The New York Times.

He thus reacted to concerns that Donald Trump, if elected President, may threaten the rule of law in the US.

Romania’s ambassador to Washington, George Maior, said that MCCain “probably” made an error when mentioning Romania in such an unfortunate context, according to Mediafax. He also added that McCain was known as a “constant friend of Romania” having signed the US Senate’s Resolution that marked 135 years of diplomatic relations between Romania and the US
