Romanian president to attend signing of new France-Germany treaty

22 January 2019

President Klaus Iohannis will attend the signing of the new treaty between France and Germany today, January 22, in the German city of Aachen.

During his trip to Germany, the president will also meet Romanian military active at the NATO base in Geilenkirchen.

After speeches from French president Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Angela Merkel, president Klaus Iohannis will hold a speech, as Romania holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council. European Council president Donald Tusk and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker will also speak at the event.

The new treaty between France and Germany comes on the 56th anniversary of the Elysee Treaty, signed by French president Charles de Gaulle and German chancellor Konrad Adenauer in 1963. The Elysee Treaty sealed the reconciliation between the two countries after the war.

The new treaty is meant to take the Elysee one further, by adapting the relations between the two states to the challenges of the 21st century. It is meant to strengthen the ties between Germany and France in the areas of economy, foreign policy and security, education and culture, research and technology, climate change and environment, and cross-border cooperation. The close bilateral cooperation is also meant to contribute to the strengthening of the EU.
