Former Romanian PM wants state aid for local firms, not multinationals

19 December 2016

Former Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) party in Romania, thinks that the future PSD-ALDE Government should make it its priority to help Romanian companies and Romanian capital.

Tariceanu has discussed with his partners from the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) about ending the “state aid granted exclusively to foreign companies, ending the story with the public procurement contracts granted only to foreign firms," he said in a televised show on Sunday evening.

“Multinationals have the interest to use the advantages of the Romanian market - outlet market, labor market - and to bring the profit to the parent company. A lot of multinationals received many advantages, all were treated with generosity and they haven’t done more than exploiting cheap labor in Romania,” Tariceanu said at local TV station Digi24.

PSD won the parliamentary elections on December 11 by a wide margin, with about 46% of the votes. Tariceanu’s ALDE got about 6% of the votes and will help PSD form a majority in the Parliament. The two parties should thus form the next Government.

This summer, Tariceanu was sent to court for lying under oath during his testimony in a case of illegal restitution involving alleged royalties, local politicians and businessmen, and Israeli billionaires. The damage to the state in this case was estimated at some EUR 145 million.
