Romania to be guest of honor at Frankfurt Book Fair 2028

23 January 2026

Romania will be the guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2028 and will manage a pavilion of approximately 1,500–2,000 sqm, according to a memorandum approved by the Romanian government on Thursday, January 22.

The government approved the interinstitutional framework for preparing and managing the events and book launches that Romania, through the Ministry of Culture, will organize on this occasion.

“Romania will be the guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2028, an excellent opportunity to promote Romanian literature and to provide visibility for Romanian writers in front of major publishing groups from all continents,” the government stated on Facebook.

During the fair, Romania will manage a pavilion of approximately 2,000 sqm and a large-scale cultural program, with related events held in several cities and regions, in partnership with German cultural institutions, universities, publishers, and civil society organizations.

“In the period 2026 – first half of 2029, a large-scale cultural program must be prepared in detail and in advance, and consists of related events held in several cities and regions, in partnership with German cultural institutions, universities, publishers, and civil society organizations. This project requires the establishment of a dedicated committee capable of coordinating a major project, with complex logistical, financial, and institutional implications,” the government stated.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is one of the most important book fairs in the world, offering a pathway to the entire global publishing scene. The 2025 edition brought together over 118,500 professionals from 103 countries, 4,350 exhibitors, and a flow of 120,000 visitors.
