Romania joins international campaign against skin cancer in May

02 May 2012

Romania will organize an information campaign on skin cancer throughout May, after the number of melanoma – or skin cancer cases went up four fold in the last 30 years, according to the Romanian Society of Dermatology.

Approximately 130,000 melanomas occur globally and around 37,000 people die from melanoma each year. Stress, food, solar radiations, low immunity and metabolic diseases are among the causes for melanoma.

May 30 will be EuroMelanomaDay in Romania, when free consultations will be offered, after patients will make an appointment by calling 0 800 811 101 between May 7 and May 10.

Doctors' advice for avoiding skin cancer include using sunscreen and avoiding exposure to sun between 10,00 and 17,00, especially at the seaside. The Romanian Society of Dermatology will propose subsidies for sunscreen for construction and agriculture workers who are more exposed to sun light. Specialists also ask those who have moles on their skin to see the doctor every time a change occurs in the structure of moles.

In 2010, for EuroMelanomaDay in Romania, over 3,000 patients were examined and 74 of them had melanoma, while 333 others had another form of skin cancer.
