Earthquake in Mexico, zero casualties reported

12 April 2012

Another pacific rim earthquake struck yesterday ( April 11 ), this time in Western Mexico. The quake, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, was much smaller than the Indonesian earthquake yesterday. Local media reports no casualties or significant damage resulting from the Mexico earthquake and there was no real disruption to life in capital Mexico City.

The earthquake occurred in the Michoacán area at just before 6pm local time and lasted just under a minute. Seven aftershocks were recorded, of magnitude between 3.8 and 4.2.

Civil Protection secretary Laura Gurza said in a press conference that the quake originated from a different center of seismic energy than the March 20 earthquake. She also called on the government to approve a new civil protection bill that will improve local and federal authorities' capacity to respond to natural disasters.

Breaking news of a large earthquake in the Indian Ocean near Indonesia yesterday (April 11 ) has triggered tsunami warnings for the region. The same areas devastated by the 2004 tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands could be hit again if a tsunami is generated. The earthquake’s epicenter was off the North Sumatra province Aceh. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center “earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean Basin.”
