New protests in Romania against governing coalition

14 May 2018

Several thousand people protested in Bucharest on Saturday evening, May 12, against the governing coalition made of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE).

Hundreds also went to the streets in big cities such as Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Iasi and Brasov.

The coalition’s failure to respect campaign promises and the legislative initiatives on justice, which haven’t been well received in the European Union, were among the main themes on the protesters’ agenda.

President Klaus Iohannis commented on the protests saying that this civic attitude was important to bring the political leaders back to reality. PSD leader Liviu Dragnea criticized the president’s statement saying that Iohannis was inciting Romania’s population to violence and was looking to induce a feeling of insecurity.

The president has criticized the current government and the ruling coalition’s economic and foreign policy decision in recent weeks, asking for prime minister Viorica Dancila’s resignation on two occasions.
