There are 7.2 million user accounts from Romania on Facebook, the world famous social network, up from 7 million in January 2014, according to the Facebrands.ro monitoring service. The number of pages from Romania exceeded 25,000, the same source has revealed.

The biggest number of Facebook users in Romania is in Bucharest – 1.4 million accounts, in a city of 1.88 million people by latest statistics. Provided every person has only one Facebook account, this means over three quarters of Bucharest inhabitants are on Facebook. The ratio could be however lower as the real number of Bucharest inhabitants might be higher than the official census figures.

Cities like Cluj-Napoca, Timişoara, Iaşi and Constanţa each host around 3 to 4 percent of Romania’s Facebook users, or up to 300,000 users each. Other cities such as Craiova, Braşov, Galaţi, Ploieşti, Oradea, Arad, Bacău, Piteşti and Sibiu are home to around 100,000 Facebook users each.

Every month, around 4 million users interact with the Romanian Facebook pages. In the first half of 2014, around 9 million unique Facebook users interacted with Romanian pages on the social network. “A big part of the 9 million accounts who interacted with Romanian pages are foreigners, which is why the number is higher than the number of Romanian users on Facebook, of 7.2 million,” said Andrei Ştefan, managing partner Facebrands.

Only 1,000 new Facebook pages were opened in Romania in the first half of 2014, while most of the existing pages – 15,600, were created between 2011 and 2012.

Worldwide, there are 1.1 billion monthly active users on Facebook.
