Romania’s national weather service – ANM has issued a code orange for extreme heat for seven counties in the southern part of the country, including the capital Bucharest. The affected counties are Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Călăraşi, Ialomiţa, and Ilfov.

According to ANM, on Monday afternoon, August 1, air temperatures will reach 37-38 degrees Celsius in this area, and even 39 degrees in some places. People living in these areas will feel heat stress.

During such periods of extreme heat, people are advised to stay indoors as much as possible and drink lots of fluids. If they must go out, they should wear light colored clothes and cover their heads.

The Bucharest municipality has set up first aid tents in several busy locations, such as Victoriei Square, Romana Square, Universitatii Square, Unirii Square, Herastrau Park, Cismigiu Park, Bucur Obor store, Gara de Nord train station.

Besides the counties affected by the orange code, most of southern and eastern Romania, including the Oltenia, Muntenia, Dobrogea, and Moldova regions, will be under code yellow for heat, which means that the air temperatures in these areas will go up to 35-36 degrees Celsius, causing discomfort to people.

The weather will remain hot on Monday night, when temperatures in Bucharest will not go below 21 degrees Celsius, and on Tuesday, August 2, when they will go up to 35-36 degrees.

Starting Monday night, the weather will become unstable and storms will hit western Romania and the mountain areas. The rains will then move to eastern and southern Romania starting Tuesday night and the temperatures will go down a bit.
