Senator wants to set up the National Guard of Romania
Romanian senator Eugen Nicolicea of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) submitted a bill on Monday on establishing the National Guard of Romania.
The structure would operate under the control of the Parliament, and would have both air and ground forces, reports local Pressone.ro.
In the Explanatory Memorandum, Eugen Nicolicea argued that setting up the National Guard of Romania would provide the organizational framework for the pre-military training of young people on a voluntary basis.
Some 65% of the National Guard’s troops would be volunteers. The structure would thus represent a low-cost professional army, and would help "increasing the safety and security of the population."
Niculicea said he took the model of the National US Guard.
