Romanian who discovered largest silver treasury gets EUR 10,000 reward from Govt. before receiving almost half of treasure's value

11 September 2013

The young Romanian who discovered a 54 kilo silver treasure and handed it over to the Museum of History will get a further EUR 200,000 reward, after already receiving around EUR 10,000 from the Romanian Government.

By law, the person who discovers an archeological artifact is entitled to 45 percent of its value.

The 47,000 silver coins discovered by Iulian near Ramnicu Valcea are worth around EUR 0.5 million on the free market.

Enache will get the reward entitled by law after the entire treasure he discovered will be assessed by experts.

The additional reward was given to Enache by Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Wednesday, September 11, in recognition of his efforts and his honesty in handing over the treasure to the museum.

The silver treasure is made of Turkish coins, which were used on the territory of the Tara Romaneasca principality 600 years ago.

Enache, 34, found the hidden treasure in the wilderness near the city of Ramnicu Valcea with the help of a metal detector he had recently bought.

Director of the History Museum Ernest Oberländer-Târnoveanu said the discovery was the largest silver treasury ever found in Romania.

“It is the biggest treasury recovered by a public institution in Romania, not only in the last 20 years, but in the last 100 years,” he said.
