Romania will host the European Snooker Championship in 2016

02 December 2015

Romania will host the first edition of the European Snooker Championship, which will bring 128 professional snooker players to Bucharest for a one-week tournament in October or November 2016. English star Ronnie O’Sullivan has already announced he would compete in this tournament.

The European Championship is the newest competition organized by World Snooker. It will be the second most important competition in Europe, after the World Championship that takes place each year at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, UK.

Romanian events promoter Adrian Thiess has reached an agreement with World Snooker to organize the first edition of the European Championship in Bucharest, according to local sports newspaper gsp.ro.

“The contract between McCann Thiess Events and World Snooker to bring the European Championship to Bucharest will be signed shortly,” Thiess said. He added that this event would place Romania on the world snooker map.

Thiess organized two demonstrative snooker matches between Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stuart Bingham in Bucharest, in November this year. Over 7,000 spectators attended the two matches, which took place at the Globus Circus in Bucharest.

Romania also hosted an amateur European Snooker Championship in 2014.
