Romania gets the gold at International Linguistic Olympiad in Beijing

Romania was awarded gold at the most recent International Linguistic Olympiad which took place in Beijing between July 21 and 25. The Romanian team also received two mentions at the same Olympiad.

Last year, when the competition took place in Manchester, the Romanians came home with a bronze medal and two mentions. So far, teams from Romania have brought home one gold medal, one bronze trophy, one best-solution prize, and four honorable mentions.

Dan Mircea Mirea from Romania got a score of 63, lower than the other gold medalists from Poland, US, Canada, and UK. Mirea was also among the 10 contestants with the best problem solutions in the competition. The biggest score went to the Polish contestant, who got a score of 84. The full results are here. 

This year’s Olympiad was attended by 152 contestants in 39 teams from 28 countries from all continents. The competition includes an individual challenge, and a team competition. Contestants are required to make analogies by using grammar logic and mathematics logic when understanding texts in language they do not speak. Problems in diverse languages, such as Benabena, Kiowa, Engenni, and Gbaya, were also included among tests.
