Japanese group Nidec opens biggest electric motor factory in Romania

25 May 2018

Japanese group Nidec opened on Thursday, May 24, the biggest electric motor factory in Romania, in Stefanesti, Arges county.

The Japanese group started its operations in Romania in 2016 when it took over the ANA Imep electric motor factory from local investor George Copos.

“A reason for opening a production capacity here is that we consider Romania has a good environment for business. The second was finding the right space to develop our business,” said Valter Taranzano, CEO Nidec Global Appliance Division, cited by local Agerpres.

The group invested several tens of millions of euro in Stefanesti, where it has 500 employees and wants to reach over 1,000 in two years. However, the group’s representatives say they have difficulties in finding qualified personnel which is why they automatized parts of the production process.

Nidec founder Shigenobu Nagamori said the Romanian Government should also provide state aid to smaller investments that show a capacity to generate profit and pay back the money to the state, not only to very big investors. He added that the lack of state aid may determine his group to seek expansion opportunities elsewhere in the region.

Nidec corporation, which has annual sales of USD 14 billion, also owns the Nidec ASI Ro industrial solutions provider and two divisions it took from American group Emerson in 2016, namely Leroy-Somer and Control Tehniques.
