Jean-Claude Juncker makes first visit in Romania as EC president

11 May 2017

Jean-Claude Juncker will visit Romania today for the first time since he took over as President of the European Commission, in November 2014.

He will address the Parliament on the future of the European Union, the same topic he will address in a later debate with the citizens, held at the Museum National Art of Romania this afternoon.

Deputies and senators will meet in a joint plenary session this morning at 10.30 to listen to Juncker's speech entitled "The Future of Europe".

Juncker will also meet Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu during the day, and will attend the Europe Day reception organized by Iohannis.

This afternoon the EC president will meet with citizens, for a debate on the future of the EU organized by the Representation of the European Commission in Bucharest at the National Art Museum of Romania. He will be accompanied by the European Commissioner Corina Cretu. The two European officials will answer the questions of those present, as well as the questions received via social media. The event will be broadcasted online.

The European Commission launched this type of meetings after the departure of the UK from the European Union and the launch of the five scenarios on the future of the EU. European Commissioners have gone to member countries to take part in such debates with the general public in order to explain the benefits of the European project and its outlook.

In Bucharest, the first such debate took place on April 20, when Frans Timmermans, the first Vice-President of the Commission, came to Romania.
