Who is the Shakespeare Ambassador in Romania?

Shakespeare Lives, an international programme of events and activities celebrating the world's most popular playwriter's work on the 400th anniversary of his death in 2016, was officially launched in Romania last week at the I.L. Caragiale National Theater.

The launching event was organized under the auspices of the British Embassy and the British Council in Bucharest.

On this occasion, Romanian actor Ion Caramitru, who is also the National Theater's director, was named the ambassador fo the Shakespeare Live program in Romania.

“Ion Caramitru, it is an honor and a great pleasure to hand you over this medal as a symbol of our respect and the official recognition that you are, without any doubt, the foremost Shakespeare Ambassador in Romania," Nigel Townson, the director of the British Council Bucharest, told the Romanian actor during the ceremony.

Ion Caramitru is a Romanian stage and film actor born in Bucharest in 1942. He has played various roles in plays signed by William Shakespeare, from Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, to Edward III and Macbeth.

Paul Brummel, the British Ambassador in Bucharest, was also present at the event.
