Romania's Health Ministry to increase retirement age for doctors

24 July 2017

Romania’s Health Ministry wants to increase the retirement age from 65 to 67 years for all doctors, regardless of their sex, according to a document of the Health Ministry cited by local Profit.ro.

The draft project was sent to the Chamber of Deputies’ family and health committee.

The current law provides that doctors’ retirement age is 65. The exception are the physicians who are academics, university professors or researchers who can continue their activity until they turn 70.

Another bill, which is currently in debate in the Parliament, allows doctors to retire later but only if they want. However, the latest document drafted by the Health Ministry provides that all doctors have to retire at 67. The main reason is that hospitals are currently facing a staff shortage.
