Romanian lung transplant patients can undergo procedure in Vienna

30 March 2017

Romanian health minister Florian Bodog announced that local patients waiting for a lung transplant can undergo the procedure at the Vienna clinic AKH, News.ro reported. The announcement comes after last week’s one that the Austrian clinic halted the admissions of patients coming from the country over capacity issues.

Most of the local lung transplant cases are referred to the AKH clinic as the procedure cannot be performed in the country yet.

The minister said the Austrian clinic would receive ten patients from Romania in the coming year. Five patients are already on the waiting list.

The Austrian doctors will also help Romanian ones to develop the lung transplant program at the Sf. Maria hospital in Bucharest, the Health Minister also said.

Minister Bodog announced that the Sf. Maria hospital will receive accreditation to perform transplants after an order in this respect will be published in the Official Monitor, News.ro reported.

Romania’s only lung transplant center can be included in national transplant program
