Music and film piracy, down significantly in Romania

19 July 2017

Music and film piracy has significantly reduced in Romania compared to five years ago, as these products have become cheaper, said Razvan Casmoiu, manager within the Romanian Copyright Office (ORDA), reports local Agerpres.

The number of irregularities found by ORDA dropped from 344 in 2012 to 113 last year.

Casmoiu explained that these products were much more expensive several years ago compared to Romanians’ purchasing power. A music CD was RON 70-100 (EUR 15-22).

However, now there are a series of apps allowing consumers to get music or films. The ORDA manager gave the example of the Zonga music app, where a monthly subscription costs EUR 3-4, or the HBO Go film app, where the entire package costs EUR 10 per month.

Music and film piracy continues at the moment not because of the price, but mostly due to the consumers’ habits, he added.

"Our role is to convey that there are legal sources at affordable prices," Casmoiu said.
