Former Romanian health minister, appointed as Central Bank deputy governor

04 May 2017

The National Liberal Party (PNL) has appointed Romanian MP Eugen Nicolaescu, a former Minister of Health, as deputy governor of the Central bank (BNR), replacing Bogdan Olteanu.

PNL also appointed several of its members in important national institutions. Sulfina Barbu, former Minister of Labour, was appointed in The National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS) whereas Anca Boagiu, former Transport Minister, became part of the management at the Court of Auditors. PNL’s Teodor Atanasiu, former National Defense Minister, is now part of the board at Romania’s Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE).

PNL president Raluca Turcan announced the appointments yesterday. She explained that professionalism and political representativeness were the criteria for filling in the positions.

The office of BNR deputy governor previously belonged to PNL and was filled by Bogdan Olteanu, a former president of the Chamber of Deputies. The position remained vacant after Olteanu resigned in August 2016 amid a corruption investigation on his previous activity.

PSD initially claimed this position but after negotiations with PNL, the social democrats gave up this office.
