Food vouchers will have a maximum value of RON 15 in Romania

17 November 2016

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis promulgated the law on changing the value of food vouchers. Their maximum value will now amount to RON 15 (EUR 3.3) instead of RON 9.57 (EUR 2.1).

The law was initiated by MPs from the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL), and the Democrat Magyar Union (UDMR).

In the initial version, the bill provided that the maximum value of food vouchers would increase to RON 12. The committees of the Chamber of Deputies, however, came up with an amendment, raising the maximum value to RON 15. The amendment was proposed by liberal MP Andreea Paul.

Food vouchers are the most widespread benefits that Romanian employees get besides their salaries. A voucher should cover an employee’s food costs for one day and the number of food vouchers an employee gets is equal to the number of working days in the next month. Thus, a higher value helps employees buy more.

Employers who give their employees food vouchers don’t pay social contributions for these instruments. However, employees pay income tax for the food vouchers.
