05 November 2010

Romanian capital city Bucharest will host a Danube Summit from November 8, an event that is expected to reconfirm in a final declaration the political support for the future EU's Danube Strategy.  The event precedes the December summit meeting of the European Council, where the European Commission will unveil a draft action plan for the Danube Strategy, with a final version to be approved by the June 2011 summit meeting of the European Council.

President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso (in picture) will attend the Danube Summit in Romania next week.  Delegations from 14 Danube countries are expected to attend and Poland is also invited to participate as observer.

Attending a February 2010 Danube Summit in Budapest, Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc proposed several projects to boost the implementation of the Danube Strategy: upgrading the Danube ports and the related infrastructure; interconnecting the national natural gas and electricity systems, as well as environmental protection projects and the involvement of Danube countries in educational projects.
