Bucharest museums celebrate the Martisor tradition with special fairs

25 February 2016

Romania has its unique way of marking the changing of the season and welcoming the spring: Martisorul, a small symbolic item that men offer to women between March 1 and March 8 as a sign of love and respect.

One can find martisoare everywhere in Bucharest before March 1. However, two of the museums in Bucharest also host special fairs in this period.

Such a fair is currently on at the Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum. The event, which brings together a wide variety of martisoare, is open between 09:00 and 17:00 until March 8.

The Romanian Peasant Museum also organizes a Martisor Fair between February 26 and March 1. Besides martisoare, the visitors will also find traditional food at the fair, such as homemade cookies and the sweet bread cozonac, as well as honey and tea. The fair will stay open between 10:00 and 18:00.
