Which are the biggest video games producers in Romania?

More than 3,000 people worked last year for the five biggest video games producers in Romania, some 400 more compared to 2013.

The five companies had cumulated revenues of EUR 84 million, up by 27% year-on-year, according to official data from the Finance Ministry.

Ubisoft was the biggest video game producer in Romania both in terms of revenues and number of employees. The French group, which is known for developing several famous video game franchises such as Assasin’s Creed, Far Cry, Just Dance, Prince of Persia, and Splinter Cell, added 230 people to its Romanian team last year, reaching over 1,300 employees. Its revenues in Romania went up by 13%, to EUR 30 million.

Electronic Arts was the second largest video game developer in Romania by revenues, with a turnover of almost EUR 25 million in 2014, up by 22% compared to 2013. The American company, which is best known for its sports-themed games (FIFA, NHL, NBA Live series), had a team of 434 in Romania last year.

French developer Gameloft, which specializes in video games for mobile platforms, had over 1,160 employees in Romania last year, 180 more than in 2013. Its local subsidiary made almost EUR 21 million in revenues, 16% more than in the previous year.

Mobile video games developer King Digital Entertainment, best known for its hit title Candy Crush Saga, also has a development studio in Romania, which had 85 employees and close to EUR 6 million in revenues last year.

The biggest Romanian developer was MavenHut, which created the Solitaire Arena game series. MavenHut had a team of 19 and EUR 2.2 million in revenues, in 2014. MavenHut recently sold the Solitaire Arena and Solitaire 3 Arena titles to American group RockYou for an undisclosed sum and plans to develop new titles.
