Snow hinders traffic on Romania's highest altitude road Transalpina

21 September 2012

Romania's highest altitude road Transalpina has been partially closed after it started snowing on Thursday evening (September 20 ). Snow and ice are making it difficult for drivers to get from Ranca to Obarsia Lotrului, so the authorities recommend avoiding the area from Novaci to Ranca.

Transalpina, at over 2,100 meters altitude connects the counties of Alba and Gorj and passes through in the North of Valcea county. The most spectacular part of the road is between Obarsia Lotrului and Ranca. Car traffic usually closes down on the road between October 15 and May 15. The Transalpina is located in the Parâng Mountain range, in the Southern Carpathians of Romania, and is one of the most spectacular roads of the Carpathian Mountains.

It snowed in the Fagaras mountains in Romania last night, with the layer of snow reaching 30 centimeters, but traffic on Transfagarasan, the other famous mountain road in Romania, was not affected. Transfagarasan, which connects the counties of Arges and Sibiu, is officially closed for eight months a year, between November 1 and July 1 on certain segments – Piscu Negru – Arges county and Balea cascade – Sibiu county.
