25 September 2012

Romania had fewer jobless people in the second quarter of this year, when the unemployment rate dropped to 6.9 percent, compared to 7.6 percent the previous quarter, shows data from the country's Statistics Institute (INS). The value was also lower than the jobless rate in the same quarter last year, which was then 7.2 percent.

The highest rate of unemployment was recorded among the young, with 21.5 percent 15 to 24 years out of work.

Romania had 10 million people in work or actively seeking work in the second quarter of the year, out of which 9.6 million were working and almost 700,000 unemployed. End August, the INS was quoting an unemployment rate of 7 percent, slightly down, and 694,000 unemployed.

Data covers International labor Office unemployment, according to which a person is considered officially unemployed if aged between 15 and 74, does not have a job, is available to start work in two weeks time and has been actively looking for jobs in the previous four weeks.
