Romania’s resident population drops below 20 million

Romania’s resident population decreased by 0.4 percent in January 2014 compared to the same month of the previous year, falling below the 20 million threshold, to 19.94 million inhabitants, according to data from the National Statistics Institute INS. The negative natural growth (minus 70,812 people) is the main cause of this decline.

In terms of gender, men represent 48.8 percent of the country’s population, similar to the figures in January 2013.

Over 56 percent of the total population are people aged between 25 and 64, while 16.5 percent are aged over 65, according to INS.
