Romania's Hidroelectrica inaugurates largest investment after 1990

10 September 2015

Romanian state-owned electricity producer Hidroelectrica has completed a EUR 150 million investment, namely the Surduc-Nehoiasu headrace tunnel, which will bring the water from the Surduc accumulation to the Nehoiasu hydro power plant.

The 16.6-km tunnel, which is to be inaugurated on September 10, is part of the Surduc-Siriu hydropower project, kicked off in 1981. This aims to set up a new 55 MW power aggregate. It is the largest investment carried out by Hidroelectrica after 1990.

For the next five years (2015-2020), Hidroelectrica has an investment budget of over EUR 1.3 billion. Of this total, EUR 450 million will be used for ongoing projects, including Siriu-Surduc, EUR 350 million will be invested in upgrading four high capacity hydro power plants, and EUR 240 million will be allocated for maintenance works. Hidroelectrica also plans to invest some EUR 300 million in other renewable energy production capacities.
