Romanians rush on local elections day to pick up new ID cards

11 June 2012

Romanian authorities issued over 30,000 ID cards on Sunday, June 10, the day of the local elections, up until 19,00, as they extended the schedule over the week-end to make sure everyone had a chance to vote. In Bucharest, 3,200 ID cards were issued.

Romanians took advantage of the special program and of the shorter waiting time to get their new ID cards faster than under normal circumstances. The normal waiting time for an ID card is of around one week.

However, for these local elections, those who changed their domicile on their ID cards after March 2012 had to vote at their previous address. Those who changed their name after marriage, after March 2012, could, in some cases, have to wait to vote, as the electoral rolls were finalized before March 2012, and each election commission had to decide what to do on a case by case basis.
