Romanian senators want to ban smoking in public institutions

01 July 2014

Several Romanian senators from the Social Democratic Party PSD have proposed banning  smoking completely in public institutions. Their legislative proposal was submitted to the Senate, and is currently under public debate, reports local Mediafax.

In Romania, in enclosed public places, smoking is allowed only in special designated smoking areas, under certain conditions, according to the law currently in force. These special areas have to serve exclusively as smoking places, not be transit areas, and be equipped with ventilation systems, ashtrays and fire extinguishers.

More and more European countries adopt stricter laws on banning smoking, the initiators of the legislative proposal argue. They give UK, Ireland, Bulgaria, Latvia, Greece, Spain and Hungary as examples where smoking is banned in all enclosed public spaces, including bars and restaurants, reports Mediafax.

The proposal will be debated by the Senate.
