Romanian senators drafts bill obliging public office candidates to undergo psychiatric examinations

07 February 2011

Five Romanian senators have drafted a bill requiring psychological and psychiatric examinations of all candidates for public office, including presidential candidates.  The bill would also oblige people holding public office to undergo annual medical check-ups in order to keep their positions.

The Government has issued a stance saying it does not agree with the bill and obliging presidential and MP candidates to take psychological and psychiatric examinations breaches the Constitution and confidentiality of personal information.

The Parliament's legislative council approved of the bill but recommended a clearer definition of public office staff that would be subjected to examination. Both the Government and the legislative council's stances are merely consultative.
