Romania plans to buy new mobile coastal defense system

01 October 2018

Romania plans to seek bids for a new mobile coastal defense system, defense minister Mihai Fifor said last week after a meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis at the Pentagon.

Romania aims “to have this new capability on the Black Sea coast, just as another measure of creating ... deterrence,” Fifor explained, according to Politico.com.

The batteries could also be deployed on corvettes that Romania also seeks to acquire, the ministry says.

U.S. group Boeing is considered among the leading companies vying for the contract, estimated at more than USD 150 million.
