Romania names candidate for VP of European Investment Bank

11 January 2016

Romania’s Finance Ministry has appointed the former central bank deputy governor Cristian Popa as Romania’s candidate for the position of Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The Government and the President Klaus Iohannis have approved the Finance Ministry’s proposal. The next step is to get the approval of the European Investment Bank.

Cristian Popa has worked for 16 years in Romania’s National Bank (BNR) and had three consecutive terms as Deputy Governor. He was responsible for the central bank’s monetary policy, financial stability, and the international relations.

Popa was also a member of the central bank’s negotiation teams with the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission, World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and EIB.

Mihai Tanasescu was previously Romania’s representative at the EIB. Former Finance Minister Ioana Petrescu was supposed to replace him, but she lost support when the Government changed.
