Romania holds national mourning day for the victims of the Italy earthquake

31 August 2016

Romania will hold a national mourning day on September 2 for the victims of the earthquake in Italy on August 24, the Government decided on Wednesday, August 31.

Romania will thus show its solidarity with the Italian people and will also mourn its own citizens who died in the disaster. A 6.2-degree earthquake shook central Italy on August 24 and almost completely destroyed the historic town of Amatrice and several villages in the area.

A total of 292 people lost their lives, according to the latest count, 11 of whom were Romanians. Earlier this week, the Government also approved a set of measures to help the victims of the earthquake and their families.

The national mourning day will be marked by hoisting Romania’s flag at half-mast at all public institutions. The national radio and TV stations will also have to adapt their schedules accordingly to such an occasion.

Romania also had a national mourning day on August 13, when Queen Anne, King Michael’s wife, was buried at Curtea de Arges.

The country also held a mourning day on March 24 this year, to commemorate the victims of the Brussels terrorist attacks. Prior to that, Romania declared three days of national mourning last year, after the tragic incident at Colectiv club in Bucharest on October 30.
