Romania, among European countries with lowest water resources

22 March 2011

Romania is one of the European countries with the lowest water resources, according to the Romanian Waters National Administration, quoted by Green Report. The average water resource is of 1.894 cubic meters a person a year.

The official data from the Romanian Waters National Administration shows that Romania depends on the water resources that come from other countries, but those are not fully usable. The administration wants to set up water pools and even build new accumulation lakes to grow the quantity of water and the storage possibility in case of floods.

Unlike Western and Northeastern Europe countries, the lack of sufficient water may become a limiting factor for Romania's economic development.

In absolute terms, the total renewable freshwater resource in Europe is around 3,500 cubic kilometers/year. The Mediterranean islands of Malta and Cyprus and the densely populated European countries (Germany, Poland, Spain and England and Wales) have the least available water per capita, according to the European Environment Agency. The downstream countries of the Danube basin have the highest dependency on external resources, according to the agency.
