New location restrictions for supermarkets, hypermarkets in Romania

Romania’s Government could introduce new rules on the location of supermarkets and hypermarkets.

Supermarkets will need to be located at least one kilometer away from traditional markets, whereas hypermarkets will need to be taken out of large cities, according to parliamentary draft projects cited by local Profit.ro.

Hypermarkets need to be located up to 5 km outside cities with over 500,000 people, up to 3 km outside cities with over 250,000 inhabitants and up to 1 km outside cities with less than 250,000 inhabitants.

The Ministry of Agriculture has informed the MPs that it is supporting these projects, according to an official document seen by Profit.to.
