Romanian SocDem MPs ask for EC vice president Timmermans’ resignation

03 October 2018

Romanian Social Democrat senator Serban Nicolae asked the first vice president of the European Commission Frans Timmermans to resign after his sharp criticism of the justice reform in Romania in a meeting of European Parliament’ Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).

“To say you are worried about laws that haven’t yet produced any effect, about assumptions and stupid and obviously subjective predictions, but to nonchalantly ignore the serious wrongs that took place, concrete and proven abuses, shows you are unworthy of the position you hold,” Serban Nicolae wrote in a Facebook post, local Mediafax reported.

Another MP of the Social Democratic Party, Catalin Radulescu, said he was more and more euro skeptical and that Frans Timmermans and EC president Jean-Claude Juncker should have resigned for “what they did in Hungary, Czech Republic and Poland” and for what they are now doing in Romania. He added that Timmermans and the Netherlands “want our port”.

Other representatives of the ruling coalition in Romania, including PSD leader Liviu Dragnea and ALDE leader Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, criticized Timmermans’ statements in the LIBE committee hearings.

Timmermans criticized the changes to the justice laws and said the European Commission would not hesitate to bring the Romanian Government to court if rules are broken.
