(P) Early Years Foundation Stage for future self-confident and responsible adults. Book a visit and find out more about the EYFS at the British School of Bucharest

10 May 2022

The first years of life are essential for children's physical and mental health and, at this age, education is focused on developing their creativity and independence. During these early years, the brain makes the fastest connections and the basis of learning and behavioural patterns are generated. Since 2000 the British School of Bucharest has helped pupils grow in a responsible and harmonious way.

Early Years Foundation Stage at the British School of Bucharest

According to studies conducted by famous experts, a child's evolution is not determined exclusively by their genetic inheritance but rather by the environment in which they grow and develop. Children need a loving and understanding educational environment where they can freely explore their curiosity and love for learning.

These are only a few of the reasons which motivated BSB to develop a caring and welcoming environment where children aged 2 to 5 feel safe and happy, allowing them to grow at their own pace. At BSB, young learners have extensive spaces where they can enjoy learning new things. They are encouraged to try and test to discover their skills and talents, which they continue to develop every year.

To provide a premium British education for EYFS children, our native English-speaking teachers carefully plan various activities that provide learning opportunities based on children's educational, social and personal needs and skills.

The Early Years incorporates three stages:

  • Pre-Nursery, aged 2-3;
  • Nursery, aged 3-4;
  • Reception, aged 4-5.

Upon enrolment for the new School Year starting in September, we will consider the child's age on 31st August.

The EYFS principles and the BSB mission

We aim to fulfil the principles of the EYFS Guidance document, published by the UK Department for Education and based on the British education curriculum, to provide an educational process that helps children discover their talents and develop valuable skills for our constantly evolving society.

A Unique Child. Every child develops and learns in different ways. The teachers at BSB are dedicated to guiding and helping learners fulfil their potential. We treat all children fairly, regardless of race, religion or ability and we value all the children and their families within our School.

Positive Relationships. Parents make an essential contribution to this wonderful early education process and we view them as partners who help us achieve the best results.

Enabling Environments. EYFS classrooms are structured to allow children to learn and explore in a safe environment. They can use complex educational materials that entertain their curiosity while discovering new things and teachers are always there to guide learners' steps. The outdoor area is an extension of the classroom to continue their learning playfully while the children go outdoors.

Learning and development. At BSB, teachers are guided by the EYFS statement: ‘In their play, children learn at their highest level’.

During the Early Years, play provides children with extraordinary possibilities. It helps them think critically, learn how to control themselves, understand the need for rules and feel motivated and interested. Play also helps children communicate with each other and work as a team, develop their confidence to make decisions, discover connections and develop an understanding. At BSB, teachers focus on children's general knowledge and understanding of the world around them through nature, Arts, Literature and Science while helping learners grow physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally.
