Internet usage in Romania, still the lowest in the EU

18 August 2014

Internet usage by the population in Romania had the highest growth in the European Union (EU) in the last seven years, but the rate is still the lowest in the EUR, according to data published by Eurostat.

The rate of internet usage by Romanians more than doubled, from 23% in 2006 to 57% in 2013. Still, Romania is behind the EU average of 77%. The rate shows how much of the population ages 16 to 74 knows how to use the internet at a basic level, which includes performing simple tasks like using a search engine or online chat.

The low level compared to other EU states is determined by the fact that a large part of Romania’s population lives in rural area, where internet coverage is still weaker than in the cities.
