24 September 2018

Over 37.6 million people were born and 24.7 million people died in Romania in the last 100 years (1918-2017) according to an official document from the Interior Ministry, quoted by local Hotnews.ro.

About 15.9 million marriages were registered in the same period.

The highest number of births was registered in 1950, when close to 722,000 people were born in Romania. The number of births then entered a downtrend reaching 286,000 in 1966. That’s when the Communist regime led by Nicolae Ceausescu banned abortions in Romania and the next year, the number of births almost doubled to 534,000.

After 1990, the number of births in Romania dropped again, stabilizing around 250,000 per year.

Meanwhile, the year with the most recorded deaths in Romania’s last 100 years was 1918, the last year of World War I.

The Interior Ministry has recently launched a public tender for creating an IT system that will allow the digitization of all civic status documents issued in Romania in the last 100 years.
